Sony’s beTV acquires more Sherlock for Asia
Sony’s Asian general entertainment network beTV has acquired season three of hit British detective series Sherlock after striking a deal with BBC Worldwide.
This comes after the finale of season two of the series was one of the highest rated series on the broadcaster.
beTV, which is available in 15 markets across Asia and is managed by Sony Pictures Television Networks, Asia, will launch the third season of the BBC drama, which will begin filing early next year.
Sherlock stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the eponymous detective and Martin Freeman as his sidekick Watson.
“beTV offers the best of light entertainment and we are delighted that viewers have responded so positively to Sherlock. The current UK adaptation has a winning formula; a cast with brilliant acting chops, and an equally outstanding script writer. Viewers can expect even more of this exceptional storytelling in season three,” said Ricky Ow, executive vice president, Networks, Asia, Sony Pictures Television.
Joyce Yeung, SVP & general manager, Sales & Distribution, Asia, BBC Worldwide, added: “Sherlock has gripped millions of fans around the world. The theories surrounding the cliff-hanging final episode of Series 2 very quickly became a sensation on discussion forums and social media. It’s fantastic that the mass of loyal Sherlock enthusiasts across Asia will be able to join the world’s most famous fictional sleuth and his side-kick when they come back to our screens next year.”
