Netflix launches in Sweden
Netflix’s Scandinavian roll out has commenced with its streaming service launching in Sweden today. Consumers can access a one-month free trial after which the local Netflix will be priced at SEK79 (US$11.81) a month.
At launch there will be TV and movie content from Fox and Sony as well as other US distributors Lionsgate and Starz. There will also be shows from BBC Worldwide.
TV titles at launch include Sherlock (BBC), Breaking Bad (Sony), Spartacus (Starz), Modern Family and Glee (Fox) and Weeds and Boss (Lionsgate). Movie titles include The Expendables, The Matrix, and Happy Feet Two.
There will also be a dedicated ‘Just for Kids’ section on the Netflix Sweden site.
Erik Barmack, director of content at Netflix, said in a blog post that new content will be added on an ongoing basis and it is understood that Netflix is close to sealing a deal with another US studio.
Netflix said in mid-August that it will launch in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland by the end of 2012 on PCs, Macs, smart TVs, games consoles, Blu-ray disc players, smartphones and tablets. There are no confirmed launch dates for the other Scandi territories.
Barmack said: “If you’re outside of Sweden, we will be in the other Nordic countries soon!”
Netflix had previously put its international expansion plans on hold in order to return to profitability in the United States and had planned to roll out in Spain before pulling the launch. Internationally, it is currently in the UK and Ireland and Canada.
