DRG completes first post-takeover deal

UK-based DRG has acquired a pair of documentaries from Discovery Communications, marking the first deal the distributor has scored since MTG Studios acquired it for £15 million (US$22.3 million) last month.

DRG has bought international rights to Discovery Channel doc KKK: Beneath the Hood and TLC’s My Three Wives, respectively.

KKK takes what is billed as an “unprecedented” look into the world of white supremacist group the Ku Klux Klan. It comes from Left/Right Productions and first broadcast on Discovery Channel in the US.

My Three Wives, which broadcast on TLC in the US, follows a man whose three wives and 24 children all live with him under one roof. Figure 8 produced the hour-long doc.

“The worlds these films allow us to explore are poles apart – the infamous far-right group and the modern polygamist family – but are equally rarely glimpsed. The human instinct of curiosity is sure to be satisfied by these eye-opening documentaries and we look forward to introducing them to the international market,” said DRG’s head of factual and factual entertainment acquisitions Ali Hill.

The deal is first announced since MTG Studios acquired the bought the company for £15 million in June after beating off competition from Sky Vision. Last week, TBI revealed MTG was ditching the Strix International sales brand and would fold its formats into DRG’s library.
