Netflix orders original drama series from Sony

Netflix’s has ordered another original drama, this time from the creators of Glenn Close legal drama Damages.

Sony Pictures Television will produce the as yet untitled show from Todd A. Kessler, Daniel Zelman and Glenn Kessler (aka KZK), which will follow a group of siblings whose secrets are revealed when their black sheep brother returns home. It marks the first time Netflix has commissioned a Big Five US studio to create a show.

As with its other originals – House of Cards, Arrested Development, Hemlock Grove and Orange is the New Black – all thirteen episodes of the new series will be released to Netflix subs simultaneously. The series goes into production early next year.

SPT was also behind Damages, which was on FX in the US before moving to DirecTV. Its international sales arm is expected to shop the new show to buyers outside of Netflix’s territories and within them after the streaming service’s exclusive window closes. It already sells another Netflix original, House of Cards.

Cindy Holland, VP of original content for Netflix said: “[KZK’s] work on Damages was truly ahead of its time and we’re proud to be bringing our viewers this upcoming series.”

Jamie Erlicht, president of programming and production for SPT said: “It took almost a year to fully develop the pitch and [KZK’s] patience paid off with the incredible reaction in the community, especially at Netflix, the perfect home for this show.”
