Amazon UK buys Halle Berry drama Extant
Amazon has snapped up exclusive first-window rights to buzzy sci-fi series Extant for its UK streaming service.
The series, which stars Halle Berry, was being shopped to buyers at the LA Screenings last week and Amazon has become the first UK buyer.
It will make the show available to its UK subs a day after the show goes out in the US.
It has already agreed a US deal for the show and will make it available on its Prime Instant Video service four days after its broadcast on the CBS broadcast network.
Extant is produced by CBS Television Studios and Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment and distributed by CBS Studios International, which has also sold it to Spain’s Atresmedia.
In the series, Berry plays an astronaut returning to Earth. It debuts on CBS in the US on July 9. The US broadcast networks gave it a straight to series order for its summer schedule in the same way it did, with success, with another sci-fi series, Under the Dome.
Amazon also took Under the Dome Rights and will now have Extant in the US and the UK.
“We’re excited to see the first window of Extant stream on Amazon in the UK,” said Armando Nuñez, president and CEO, CBS Global Distribution Group. “With its stellar talent, unique concept and production auspices, Extant is sure to be this year’s television event in the US and around the globe.”
