Netflix plans German content
Netflix aims to produce an original series in Germany, according to CEO Reed Hastings.
Hastings told German news magazine Der Spiegel that the company would “certainly” produce something in Germany, one of the six European markets in which it is set to launch a service in the near future.
Hastings told the magazine that his priority was to “understand the viewing habits” of Germany audiences rather than to establish Netflix as the market leader immediately.
One show that will not be in Netflix’s line-up at launch is flagship drama House of Cards, which is licensed to pay TV operator Sky Deutschland.
Netflix is expected to launch in Germany on September 16.
Hastings comments come after Netflix’s announcement that its first French original drama would be political drama Marseille, written by Dan Franck (La Separation, Carlos) and produced by Pascal Breton’s Paris-based Federation Entertainment.
