Sony to fund Frederator toon shorts
Sony Pictures Animation will fund 12 short animated programmes that will go out via the Channel Frederator YouTube network.
SPA, part of Sony Pictures Entertainment has partnered with Fred Seibert’s Cartoon Hangover channel to create GO! Cartoons. The platform will act as an incubator that SPA will use to unearth new animation talent.
Of the twelve 5-minute series SPA funds, one will be extended to a limited series for Cartoon Hangover, which is part of the Frederator MCN and has 1.3 million subscribers.
“This is a great opportunity for Sony Pictures Animation to find new talent that might not emerge from more traditional platforms,” said Bob Osher, president of Sony Pictures Digital Productions.
He added Seibert was an expert in implementing incubation strategies, referring to his work with The FairlyOdd Parents, The Powerpuff Girls and Adventure Time as evidence.
“We’ve discovered amazing young talent through these unique incubators, and for the artists, this is an easier way to be seen,” added Seibert.
“For Sony Pictures Animation, it provides different methods to develop projects. And for Cartoon Hangover, it’s a great way to shake the trees for new talent thanks to the involvement of a major animation studio like Sony Pictures Animation—and we’ll continue to fund and produce content our own unique way.”
