UK leads video apps market, Netflix in first
Consumers in the UK are the most voracious in Europe when it comes top downloading video content apps, and the Netflix app is the most downloaded in the territory.
In terms of number of downloads, Netflix was ranked ahead of the BBC iPlayer (pictured), YouTube and ITV Player apps, which occupied second, third and fourth respectively.
The data was collated by app analytics specialist App Annie. It looked at the major European markets, revealing a very different picture in each. The BBC iPlayer app was the only one from a TV player that made the top five rankings outside of its domestic market.
In France broadcaster M6’s 6play was the most downloaded ahead of YouTube, TF1’s MyTF1, Canal+’s myCanal and telco SFR’s SFR TV. SFR was the only telco to have a top-five-rated app.
In Germany, ProSieben’s 7TV was top of the pile ahead of Bertelsman’s RTL Inside, ZDF’s ZDFmediathek, YouTube and ARD’s Das Erste.
App Annie noted that Germany leads the way in terms of commercialisation, with a higher rate of revenue-to-downloads than its peers although with a far greater number of downloads, the UK was the biggest single revenue-generating market.
