Netflix bags Apatow’s Pee-wee Herman flick
Streaming service Netflix has bagged exclusive international rights to Pee-wee Herman’s Big Holiday, an upcoming comedy film from director Judd Apatow.
This is the latest feature Netflix has acquired exclusive rights to as the US-based company sticks to its aggressive movie buying strategy.
Netflix takes rights in all territories it operates in, under terms of the agreement. Apatow (Superbad, Anchorman) worked up the movie with John Lee (Inside Amy Schumer), who makes his directorial debut with the film.
Pee-wee Herman’s Big Holiday features the titular Herman, a popular American hero of stage, TV and film, as he meets a mysterious stranger while on his first-ever holiday.
“We didn’t hesitate for a moment knowing that Pee-wee’s Big Holiday was such a passion project for Paul and Judd and we are delighted by the opportunity to introduce such a beloved character to a new generation,” said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos.
“As a fan of Pee-wee Herman since he first appeared on The Dating Game, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with the brilliant Paul Reubens on this film. It is a dream come true,” said Judd Apatow.
Netflix is already working with Apatow after handing his relationships-themed television comedy Love a two-season order back in September last year.
