Netflix greenlights Ansari comedy

NetflixStreaming service Netflix has given the greenlight to an untitled comedy series from stand-up and comic actor Aziz Ansari.

Ansari, who has starred in a number of Netflix stand-up specials, co-created the show with Parks and Recreation’s Alan Yang. They will executive produce alongside Michael Schur, David Miner and Dave Becky.

Parks and Rec producer Universal Television is attached to produce alongside 3 Arts Entertainment, which has overall deals with Yang and Schur.

Ansari starred in seven seasons of NBC comedy Parks and Rec and also appeared in the US version of The Office. The greenlight of his show, plot details of which are scant, comes after Netflix ordered a Full House reboot yesterday and commissioned a David Cross and Bob Odenkirk sketch series.

The new series is shooting in LA, and various US trades are reporting it will feature semi-autobiographical segments from Ansari, who stars alongside H. Jon Benjamin, Lena Waithe, Eric Wareheim, Noël Wells and Kelvin Yu. Claire Danes (Homeland) is billed to guest.

Meanwhile, Netflix has commissioned a second season of Marvel Television superhero series Daredevil, which debuted less than two weeks ago and has garnered positive critical response.
