Apple aims for local stations with web TV service

Apple is reportedly aiming to offer live programming from local TV stations as part of its expected US web TV service – a plan that could delay the service’s launch.

According to tech site Re/Code – which cites industry executives familiar with Apple’s plans – the company wants to offer programming from local broadcast stations in a move that will differentiate the Apple service from other cloud TV offerings.

The report claims that the plans have “complicated” Apple’s TV network negotiations, as clearing the rights to show local programmes could take time and offering the content could in some instances require broadcasters to build new streaming infrastructure.

Re/Code claimed that Apple might not be ready to launch its cloud TV service in early autumn, as previous reports have suggested, and said it is unclear which programmers have signed up to the service so far.

The Wall Street Journal reported in March that Apple is planning to launch an online TV service this autumn in partnership with broadcasters including ABC, CBS and Fox as part of a “slimmed-down” cable-style bundle of roughly 25 channels.
