Mubi strikes Sony SVOD deal
UK-based SVOD service Mubi has landed its first deal with a Hollywood studio, striking a content agreement with Sony Pictures Television.
The movie-focused SVOD service gets a raft of classic SPT-distributed features under the terms of the deal.
Titles include Taxi Driver and Dr. Strangelove, and there will also be more recent titles added to the Mubi line-up including Snatch and Punch-Drunk Love.
Mubi has SVOD movie deals with suppliers including Entertainment One, Icon and StudioCanal, but the SPT deal is its first with a Hollywood major.
“Mubi is already curating the best of cinema for its audience – international film has been at the core of our film selection but this deal will allow us to program some of the greatest and most popular films ever made,” said Mubi founder and CEO Efe Cakarel.
Having started out as a video-rental business, MUBI is now an SVOD service specialising in movies. It has a regularly refreshed selection of 30 movies for a monthly fee of £2.99 or €4.99 (US$4.56).
Earlier this year it raised US$15 million in additional funding in a financing round from a trio of private equity firms – MMC Ventures, White Star Capital and Floreat Group – and said it will use the cash to fund new programming deals.
