BBC America ties with Deutschland ’83 scribe

US cable channel BBC America now counts a new project from Deutschland ’83 co-creator Anna Winger on its development.

The untitled scripted project is billed as a dark comic family adventure-drama and a “a celebration of the city of Berlin today”.

Winger wrote and created RTL and Sundance Channel critical hit Deutschland ’83 (pictured) with her producer husband Joerg Winger. The show is considered to have led to renewed interest in German drama programming.

Her new show sits on a BBC America development slate also including an untitled comic noir set in the 1950s from Anders August (The Pig, Follow the Money), which has Michael London (Sideways) attached to produce.

The Greater Good comes from Oscar-nominated filmmaker Sana Shapiro (Murderball), which tells the story of a woman, the lone survivor of a massacre of a cult, who then becomes an atheist preacher as she tries to rid the world of false prophets. Lakeshore Entertainment (Underworld) is attached.

Moths comes from Tony Wood’s Cineflix Media-backed Buccaneer Media, and follows a thrill-seeking American woman who finds herself with an unfamiliar world after witnessing a crime at the epicentre of Tokyo’s Shibuya sub-culture.

BBC America also has an untitled project from Sebastian Silva (Nasty Baby), which uses “unconventional storytelling” – including real people – to explore humorous, uncomfortable and absurd stories of modern dating. A24 is attached to produce.

Finally, Dirk Gently is an adaptation of Douglas Adams’s comic novel Dirk Gently Holistic Detective Agency.

Max Landis is the writer, with IDW, Circle of Confusion and Ideate producing.

BBC America also unveiled its first coproductions with AMC since the latter’s parent, AMC Networks, took a 49.9% stake in the BBC Worldwide channel.

Undercover is a political drama miniseries starring Sophie Okonedo about a lead character about to become the first black woman to hold the highest ranking public prosecution role in the UK, who is drawn into a mystery involving her husband.

Peter Moffat (Silk) is the writer, with Hilary Salmon, head of BBC Drama Production England, attached to produce for BBC One and BBC America.

Thirteen is a five-part mystery mini about a girl who escapes from the cellar she has been held in for 13 years. BBC In-House Drama Production England will produce, with new BBC indies boss Liz Kilgarriff executive producing.
