Ovation crowns Portrait Artist of the Year
US channel Ovation has acquired seasons one and two of Portrait Artist of the Year, an art competition show from the UK.
The show, from Storyvault Films and for Sky Arts in the UK, will debut on Ovation on October 18 following a deal with distributor Zodiak Rights.
Portrait Artist of the Year challenged shortlisted artists to produce portraits of famous sitters, with the aim to reach a grand final at the National Portrait Gallery in London. Stars that sat for portraits included Sir Ian McKellen, Hilary Mantel, Julian Fellowes, Richard Dawkins and Alan Cumming.
“This series hits on so many of Ovation’s key touchstones,” said Ovation’s VP, scheduling and acquisitions, Lori Hall. “Not only is it centered in the arts, but it focuses on the artistic process and celebrates the next generation of artists.
“The production itself is handled deftly, bringing the magic of capturing the nuances of a human face to life in a smart and totally entertaining way. We think the show will win over Ovation viewers as it has won art enthusiasts throughout the UK.”
