CBS ends Under the Dome
US broadcaster CBS will end rating smash Under the Dome at the end of its current third season.
The show is notable for creating a new summertime window for original American dramas when launched in 2013, which CBS has since subbed ‘summer event’ programming.
“Two years ago, Under the Dome broke new ground in the summer and became an instant hit on CBS, as well as with viewers around the world,” said Nina Tassler, chairman, CBS Entertainment.
The Amblin Television and CBS TV Studios series follows a community shut off from the outside world when a huge dome inexplicably emerges around the town.
Upon the series’ launch, Under the Dome became the biggest-rating US summer drama in 21 years. That, added with a funding model that included SVOD rights agreements with Amazon Prime Instant Video, laid the template for Extant and new season series Zoo.
“Dome’s event storytelling and multi-platform business model paved the way for more original summer programming with the successful rollouts of Extant and Zoo,” said Tassler.
