Foxtel calls on Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow

Australian cable platform Foxtel has acquired new season Warner Bros. superhero dramas Supergirl (above) and Legends of Tomorrow (below)

The shows would have previously automatically gone to Nine Network, but the free-to-air broadcaster allowed its output deal to lapse earlier this year as it moves away from expensive foreign acquisitions.

Supergirl, which was among the buzziest shows at the LA Screenings in May, and Legends of Tomorrow will launch on Foxtel channels soon after their US debut on CBS and The CW, respectively.

Supergirl is to debut in the US on October 26, and on Foxtel’s Fox8 on Sunday, December 6 in an 8.30pm slot.

It stars Melissa Benoist as the cousin of Superman, who learns to embrace her superpowers after hiding them for more than a decade. Berlanti Productions, DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Television are the producers, with Warner Bros. International Television Distribution holding sales rights.

Legends of Tomorrow, which is a spin-off of The Flash and Arrow, follows a ragtag group of heroes and villains brought together to prevent the destruction of the world and time itself. It will debut in the US next year, with Berlanti, DC, Warner Bros. and Bonanza Productions attached as producers.

Fox8 already has rights to Arrow and The Flash, with the season four of the former launching in Australia on Thursday, October 8 at 7.30pm and season two of the latter a day earlier in a 7.30pm slot.
