Netflix gets Bob Odenkirk original feature
US streaming service Netflix is continuing its push into original feature films with Girlfriend’s Day, a black comedy starring Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul star Bob Odenkirk.
The show follows a put-upon greetings card writer (Odenkirk) who is framed for murder.
US title The Hollywood Reporter broke the news. Girlfriend’s Day will have a day and date release on the Netflix streaming service, as well as in movie theatres, using the same release model as Beasts of No Nation, according to the report.
That movie generated poor box office numbers, but was critically acclaimed and the cinema release means it is eligible for awards including the Oscars.
Netflix has been moving into original features and ordering these alongside its original series over the past year. Its features move has been followed by Amazon Studios and smaller SVOD services such as Icflix.
