CBBC calls on Robot Wars successor Airmaggedon

UK kids TV channel CBBC has commissioned DHX Media to produce two seasons of a new drone-based battle format, Airmaggedon, which is from the creator of Robot Wars.

DHX-owned Canadian channel Family CHRGD has also picked up the show, which is being produced in association with Conceive Media. DHX will also get international distribution rights and brand ownership.

The format is being billed as “ultimate test of aerial skill, conflict and competition, featuring state-of-the-art radio controlled drones in a remote-controlled contest for supremacy”.

Child competitors will battle in an ‘Airena’, with four teams competing in each episode, and Will Best and Rachel Stringer presenting.

Airmaggedon comes from Steve Carsey, who was behind Robot Wars and Techno Games. It will premiere on CBBC in the new year and on Family CHRGD in spring 2016.

CBBC’s Cheryl Taylor commissioned the show, with Hugh Lawton executive producing for the channel.

“Airmageddon is going to be a high octane entertainment extravaganza testing our young contestants to the limit as they battle to determine which team can claim ultimate mastery of daring drone-control skills,” said Taylor.

“With video games top of mind for a lot of kids, the integration of gaming technology into programming combined with the competition element positions this show to be popular with viewers and contestants alike,” added DHX Television’s VP, programming, Michael Serafini.
