Amazon to leave Ripper Street
The fifth season of period crime drama Ripper Street will be its last, Amazon Prime Instant Video has revealed.
Filming of the fifth run has begun in Dublin ahead of its exclusive debut on Amazon’s SVOD platform later this year.
Amazon commissioned two seasons of the show last year, a development that followed the co-funding of a third season with UK pubcaster the BBC after the latter had axed it due to cost constraints.
Following those deals, all four previous Ripper Street seasons are available on Amazon in the UK.
Ripper Street follows Victorian London police officers attempting to maintain law and order on the streets of Whitechapel.
Amazon saved the show from cancellation following its second season after an outcry from fans, and commissioned producer Tiger Aspect Productions to create a third season. The fourth debuted exclusively on the platform in January.
It has been a major hit for Amazon, which commonly refuses to release ratings data. The company announced season three as the most-streamed show on the service on launch and also its most popular British drama.
