Amazon snags Doctor Who rights

Scripted-logo-460_2Amazon has bagged exclusive US streaming rights to Doctor Who, the iconic UK sci-fi series.

Doctor-Who-LandscapeIn terms of streaming in the US, Netflix and Hulu has carried current and older episodes of Doctor Who but those deals ran out earlier this year meaning there had been no legitimate streaming option for fans for several weeks.

Amazon confirmed yesterday it had picked up the series.

It will make eight seasons of the show, which plays on BBC One in the UK and BBC America in the US, on its Prime Instant Video service from late March.

There will also be seasonal specials of the show added at this point.

This autumn, the latest season of Doctor Who and a new special will be added to the line-up.

BBC America will launch a new series of Doctor Who and a special later this year and another new season in 2017.

Doctor Who is one of BBC commercial division BBC Worldwide’s key properties and Worldwide struck the new US deal.
