German drama sells to Scandis

Beta Film has shopped 40 hours of scripted content to broadcasters in Scandinavia.

Public broadcasters DR in Denmark, NRK (Norway), SVT (Sweden) and YLE (Finland) have all acquired shows including Oliver Hirschbiegel’s 6x60mins Berlin-set spy drama The Same Sky and the 15^th century 6x60mins period drama Maximilian and Marie de Bourgogne.

The quartet all also bought Beta-distributed 3x90mins right wing terror-trilogy NSU German History X and Tom Tykwer’s 1920s crime-series 16x60mins Babylon Berlin.

Nordic noir series perform well in Germany and the flow of content is now starting to go on the other direction, with Germany currently a drama production hotspot.

Stephen Mowbray, head of acquisitions SVT, said: “German producers are now delivering world-class fiction and partnering with Beta secures a raft of exciting titles for the Swedish public,” while Tarmo Kivikallio, head of acquisition at YLE, said: “New German drama is strong at the moment in Finland. The way German drama deals with German history in unique and thrilling.”
