Chinese VOD net takes 1,000 BBCWW hours
Chinese on-demand service Tencent has acquired more than 1,000 hours of documentary programming from BBC Worldwide Asia, which is part of the BBC’s commercial arm.
Tencent Holdings, the parent of the VOD service, will play the docs on online platforms such as Tencent Vido and v.qq.com.
The deal comprises programmes such as Attenborough: 60 Years in the Wild, How We Got to Now, The Mekong River with Sue Perkins and Rick Stein’s Taste of Shanghai.
“The BBC’s documentary content is best-in-class and viewers in China are eager for rich, high quality programmes,” said Tencent’s corporate VP, Sun Zhong Huai. “The addition of the BBC’s content to our catalogue will further enhance our world-class premium content for users.”
The news comes after BBCWW inked a programming deal with another Chinese company, Hunan’s Mango TV.
