BBC names new comedy commissioning editor

UK pubcaster the BBC has appointed ex-CPL Productions producer Alex Moody as commissioning editor, comedy.

She replaces Chris Sussman, who was recently promoted to head up the BBC’s comedy department and replace Myfanwy Moore.

She will join Kristian Smith and Kate Daughton on controller of comedy commissioning Shane Allen’s team, and will oversee a slate including Cuckoo, People Just Do Nothing and Charlie Brooker’s Weekly Wipe.

She will also develop a slate of new shows alongside these, and act as a ‘diversity champion’ for BBC Comedy.

Moore was most recently at CPL, and has worked on BBC iPlayer short film Elephant while at another indie, Happy Tramp. Prior to that, she worked in development for the BBC’s in-house comedy unit.

Earlier in her career, Moore worked at Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer’s Pett Productions, and produced shows such as Tittybangbang and Shooting Stars for the BBC, Monkey Trousers for ITV and The Angelos Epithemiou Show for Channel 4.

“Alex brings her boundless energy, enthusiasm and finely tuned comic sensibilities to boost the range of the BBC talent family and will play a key part in delivering over 100 hours of originated comedy on BBC television,” said Allen.

“It’s an exciting and dynamic time to join us, with the cross-channel approach to commissioning, the fresh opportunities for new talent around Three, and BBC iPlayer providing a springboard to future audience consumption.”

Moore begins her role on May 3.

The news comes a day ahead of the official launch of the BBC’s new-look production division, BBC Studios, almost a month after its originally-planned debut date.
