Netflix orders Lost in Space reboot
Streaming service Netflix has ordered a drama reboot of the 1960s Irwin Allen sci-fi drama Lost in Space.
Legendary Television will create the one-hour, ten-part series, which will debut on Netflix globally in 2018.
The original series, like the movie, will centre around the Robinson family, who are stranded on a space ship light years from Earth in an alien environment.
Zack Estrin will executive produce alongside writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, Synthesis Entertainment’s Kevin Burns and Jon Jashni, and Neil Marshall and Marc Helwig from Applebox. Marshall will direct several episodes.
The original Lost in Space aired for three seasons on CBS between 1965 and 1968, and has re-run on FX and Syfy, and is currently offered on-demand by Netflix’s rival Hulu.
This month, Netflix has stocked up on original programming by ordering unscripted programming featuring social media star Cameron Dallas and the world of college American football; a coproduction with Canada’s CBC based on a Margaret Atwood novel; new kids series, including ones based on Spy Kids and the Skylanders video game series; an Indian crime drama; and a puppet series from The Jim Henson Company featuring Julie Andrews.
