Walking Dead producer takes podcast horror to Amazon
Amazon has greenlit Lore, a horror anthology series based on the Aaron Mahnke podcast of the same name.
The Walking Dead producer Gale Anne Hurd is making the show through her Valhalla prodco, alongside Propagate Content, the US prodco run by Ben Silverman and Howard T. Owens.
The podcast gets 2.5 million listens a month. In the show, Mahnke looks at the real-life stories behind horror characters and myths including zombies, werewolves, ghosts and vampires. He will executive-produce the TV series, which will run to ten parts. Glen Morgan (X-Files) will be the series’ showrunner.
Amazon has the show for its Instant Video streaming service in the US, UK, Germany and Japan. The show will have factual and dramatic elements and bow on Amazon next.
“Lore is a thrilling podcast with a rabid following, and we jumped at the opportunity to work with Gale Anne Hurd, Ben Silverman and Howard Owens to develop it into a series for Amazon Prime members,” said Conrad Riggs, head of unscripted, Amazon Originals.
Hurd said: “Just as Mahnke revolutionised the serial podcast, Amazon is reinventing the unscripted series—and I couldn’t be more excited about the mashup.”
Owens and Silverman said in a statement: “Lore has inspired nightmares for millions of fans while capturing our own imaginations, and we couldn’t be more excited to materialise these real-life horror stories in a way never seen before.”
