Endemol Shine’s NL Film gets Oscars nod

NL Film, the Endemol Shine-owned prodco behind TV drama Penoza, has had its latest feature selected as the Netherlands’ entry for the Academy Awards.

The Dutch film institute, Eyefilm, selects one movie per year to be the country’s official entry for the Foreign Language Film category at the Oscars.

NL Films’ Tonio has been selected, giving it a shot at 2017 Academy Award glory.

The film, which was released domestically last month to widespread acclaim, follows events after 21-year-old Tonio is killed in an accident, creating repercussions for family and friends as they attempt to keep their lives and relationships together.

It is based on the best selling novel of the same name by Dutch author A.F.TH. Van Der Heijden, and directed by Paula van der Oest, who has had an earlier Oscar nomination in the Foreign Language category for 2001’s Zus & Zo.

NL Film made the film in association with NTR, Zilvermeer Productions and Nanook Entertainment.

The prodco’s biggest international TV hit is crime drama Penoza, which was remade as Red Widow for the US broadcast net ABC.

It has also made the local remake of In Treatment, as well as a raft of drama series. It also has a long list of movie credits.

The 89^th Academy Awards will be held on February 26, 2017.
