UK, Germany clean up at international Emmys

Programmes from the UK and Germany led the way at the International Emmy Awards in New York last night, winning six of the gongs that were up for grabs.

UK winners at the event, which was presented by Alan Cummings, came in the Best Performance by An Actor, Comedy and TV Movie/ Mini-Series categories, while German projects triumphed in the Best Performance by An Actress, Documentary and Drama Series categories.

The Best Performance by An Actor was won by Dustin Hoffman for BBC One TV movie Esio Trot. The Roal Dahl adaptation was made by UK prodco Endor and is distributed by the producer’s owner, Red Arrow.

UKTV’s David Hasselhoff spoof doc Hoff the Record won the Comedy award. The UK’s trio of wins was rounded off by miniseries Capital, which was made by Endemol Shine prodco Kudos for BBC One.

Buzzy drama series Deutschland 83, produced by UFA and distributed by FremantleMedia, won the coveted Drama Series award.

The best doc accolade went to Zischlermann Filmproduktion’s War of Lies, while the Best Performance by An Actress gong went to Christine Paul for Enigma Films’ ARD drama Under the Radar.

Other winners on the night included Japan’s Wowow for factual project The Man who Shot Hiroshima, Meter TV for The Great Swedish Adventure in the non-scripted entertainment category, and Globo’s Hidden Truths in the telenovela section.

Also on the night Danish actress Birgitte Hjort Sorenson (Borgen), presented the International Emmy Directorate Award to Maria Rørbye Rønn, CEO and director genera of Danish pubcaster, recognising its influence in the Nordic Noir genre.
