Netflix buys Oprah net drama Greenleaf
Netflix has acquired Greenleaf, the drama series that plays on Oprah Winfrey and Discovery cable net OWN in the US.
The streaming service has snagged international rights, and will put the series out everywhere except North America, making eps available a day after their debut in the US.
The first season of Greenleaf, which is produced by Oprah’s Harpo prodco alongside Lionsgate, will go out on Netflix on March 3, and the upcoming second season from mid-March as it bows on OWN.
Lionsgate’s distribution division sells the series internationally and struck the Netflix deal, the latest deal between the streamer and the SVOD platform, which counts Lionsgate’s Orange is the New Black among its top originals.
The show, which follows the titular Greenleaf family and their Memphis church, is the most popular programme on OWN.
