Amazon heads to Carnival Row with Legendary
Subscription VOD service Amazon has greenlit a neo-Victorian fantasy drama Carnival Row.
The original one-hour drama will be a neo-noir set in a neo-Victorian city that follows a string of unsolved murders that threatened an easy peace that exists in which mythical creatures fleeing their war-torn homeland have gathered together.
Legendary Television is attached as produced with showrunner Rene Echevarria (Star Trek, Teen Wolf) writing and executive producing.
Paul McGuigan (Clash of the Titans) is director and executive producer, while Travis Beacham wrote the original scripted, titled A Killing on Carnival Row, back in 2005 and is executive producer on the resulting series.
“There has never been a series like Carnival Row before,” said Joe Lewis, head of comedy, drama and VR at Amazon Studios. “The scope of the storytelling combined with the uniqueness of the world, themes and aesthetics haven’t been on TV before.
“A simple police investigation will lead us down a remarkable journey in a world where humans and creatures co-exist.”
Legendary Entertainment’s president of scripted television, Lauren Whitney, called the series “inspiringly ambitious”.
Filming is scheduled for the autumn of 2018 ahead of a 2019 debut on the Amazon Prime Video on-demand platform.
