Netflix acquires New York doc pair

Streaming service Netflix will launch two documentaries globally after acquiring rights ahead of the New York Film Festival.

Joan Didion: The Center Will Not Hold and Voyeur will debut globally on the SVOD service after their debuts at the festival.

Joan Didion… comes from director Griffin Dunne and explores the life of American author and cultural critic Didion, who has been commenting on US life since the 1950s.

Dunne, Mary Recine and Annabelle Dunne prodice the doc for Netflix, which will market it as an original.

Voyeur follows another US journalism giant, Gay Talese, as he reports on controversial motel owner Gerald Foos, who watched guests in intimate moments for decades via specially designed ceiling vents.

“Directors Myles Kane and Josh Koury deftly catapult us into one of the most highly complex and wily relationships between writer and subject, where the unremitting pursuit of the ultimate scoop and the ever-shifting memory of a serial voyeur collide and create an entirely new truth,” said Lisa Nishimura, Netflix’s VP of original documentaries. “Kane and Koury have created an endlessly fascinating exploration of desire, control and the stories we tell ourselves.”
