Netflix acquires Russell Peter’s Indian Detective
Netflix has acquired the rights for India-based dramady The Indian Detective, starring Canadian comedian Russell Peters.
The four-part comedy will premiere on Netflix on December 19, following an initial run on CraveTV and CTV in Canada.
Peters plays a Toronto police officer who unexpectedly finds himself investigating a murder in his parents’ homeland.
The series was developed by Frank Spotnitz and Smita Bhide. It is a coproduction between Spotnitz’s Big Light Productions, Blue Ice Pictures, Wonder Films and CTV.
Peters, Spotnitz, Blue Ice Pictures’ Lance Samuels, Daniel Iron and Mark Burton, Clayton Peters and Paul Canterna executive produce.
Sharon Remmer (The Man in the High Castle) serves as co-executive producer.
SVOD services Netflix and Amazon have invested heavily into Indian content this year, with titles such as Inside Edge, Selection Day and Again.
Netflix has struggled to gain traction locally, however, with many commentators claiming it is pricing some customers out of the market. Recent studies show Amazon has better market penetration in India.
