HBO greenlights Spanish-language comedy
HBO has given the green light to a Spanish-language comedy pilot named Mexico City: Only Good Things Happen.
The half-hour series is created by Portlandia star and producer Fred Armisen (pictured left), Broadway Video and Más Mejor.
The comedy follows a group of friends obsessed with horror films and monster makeup in present day Mexico.
It is written by Armisen, Ana Fabrega and Julio Torres. Fernando Frias is set to direct the pilot.
Armisen and Broadway Video founder Lorne Michaels will executive produce the show with Andrew Singer. Fabrega Torres will co-executive produce with Alice Mathias.
Broadway Video is producing with Más Mejor, its Latino-focused comedy studio and network it launched with NBCUniversal’s Telemundo.
Digital players Netflix and Amazon have also made a move towards incorporating more Spanish-language originals.
Netflix recently commissioned its second Spanish-language original Elite and Amazon has acquired Spanish drama Locked Up.
