Netflix orders reboot of Maupin’s Tales Of The City
SVOD platform Netflix has greenlit a new TV version of Tales Of The City, Armistead Maupin’s classic series of novels about life in San Francisco, with its particular emphasis on the LBTQ+ community.
The show will be a 10-part limited series produced by Working Title TV and NBCUniversal International Studios.
The showrunner and writer of the series is Lauren Morelli (Orange is The New Black), who said: “The magical, vivid world that Armistead Maupin built in Tales Of The City is one that offered so many – particularly the LGBTQ+ community – a home for the first time. For many, Tales was the first time they saw themselves on screen. I am humbled to now find my own home within Tales and to continue telling Armistead’s stories.”
Tales Of The City is a series of nine novels that has been published over the period 1978 to 2014. It first saw the light of day as a TV franchise in the 1990s and early 2000s.
The new version, which is due to launch in 2019, will see Laura Linney and Olympia Dukakis reprise their roles as Mary Ann Singleton and Anna Madrigal, with additional cast yet to be announced.
“I couldn’t be more excited about this new incarnation of Tales,” said Maupin. “It’s set in present-day San Francisco with all the joys and complications that might suggest.”
