Netflix & Buzzfeed partner for short-form doc
Netflix is set to launch a new short-form documentary series with Buzzfeed that follows the lives of the publisher’s reporters.
Follow This is a 20-episode series that will premier July 9 on Netflix worldwide. Each 15-minute episode will be released weekly.
The writers featured on the series include culture writer Bim Adewunmi, senior national correspondent John Stanton, reporter Ahmed Ali Akbar, science reporter Azeen Ghorayshi, Buzzfeed India’s editor-in-chief Rega Jha and tech writer Charlier Warzel.
The first episode will be based around reporter Scaachi Koul.
Follow This will be produced by Buzzfeed news. Jessica Harrop serves as showrunner and executive producer, along with Shani Hilton, Linzee Troubh and Cindy Vanegas-Gesuale serving as executive producers.
For Netflix, Jason Spingarn-Koff, Kate Townsend and Lisa Nishimura will serve as executive producers.
“We’re thrilled that Netflix saw the drama in the work of our journalism and the stories we tell and we’re so pleased to have brought what we’ve learned to Netflix’s unmatched audience,” said BuzzFeed news editor-in-chief Ben Smith.
Netflix has recently begun to play with distribution strategies for shows that steer away from its binge-inducing multi-episode drops. Examples of this include The Joel McHale Show with Joel McHale, which also launches new episodes weekly, and My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, which launches monthly.
