Netflix unveils new series including first project with Shondaland

Netflix revealed plans for a slew of new shows over the weekend, including two scripted series orders and a development partnership with Shonda Rhimes on a series about fake New York socialite.

The first of the two new series is Kaos, which Netflix describes as “a darkly comedic reimagining of Greek mythology, exploring themes of gender politics, power, and life in the underworld.” Produced by All3Media and Brightstar, the 10 x 60 minute series will be created and written by Charlie Covell (The End of the F***ing World).

The second series is Away, which Netflix has ordered from Universal Television, True Jack Productions and 6th & Idaho. Also 10 episodes, Away is loosely inspired by Chris Jones’ Esquire article of the same name. Netflix calls it “an epic love story and a thrilling tale of survival set against humanity’s greatest endeavour – the first human mission to Mars. Emma Green is an American astronaut who must leave her husband and daughter behind in order to command an international space crew embarking upon a treacherous, year-long mission.”

The tie up with Rhimes’ Shondaland is also based on an article. In this case, the partners have acquired the rights to the viral New York Magazine article How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People by Jessica Pressler. The resultant series will be the first to emerge since Rhimes signed an overall deal with Netflix last August. It will tell how Delvey (real name Anna Sorokin) dissembled her way into becoming a popular “it” girl on the New York social scene.
