Amazon’s Salke reveals plans, greenlights Modern Love series

Amazon Studios’ new chief Jennifer Salke (right) has given some insights into her programming plans in a series of interviews with US media outlets. Speaking to The New York Times, she said the company is pushing ahead with its ambitious adaptation of JRR Tolkien’s The Lord Of The Rings. She also told Deadline of Amazon’s plans to adapt The New York Times’ iconic Modern Love column for television.

According to Salke, the eight-part Modern Love series will be a romantic comedy anthology, with each half hour episode telling a stand-alone story. The plan is for the series, helmed by John Carney, to deal with sexual, romantic, familial, platonic and self love. It is part of Amazon’s attempt to create “big addictive shows for women.”

In other news, Amazon has also released a trailer for Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan (left), an Amazon Prime Original that will premier globally on August 31. Described as an action-packed CIA thriller, the series is a reinvention of novelist Tom Clancy’s famous fictional hero. Previously adapted for the cinema, this version will see Ryan portrayed by John Krasinski, with Carlton Cuse (Lost, Bates Motel) and Graham Roland (Prison Break) serving as the series’ showrunners. The series is a co-production with Paramount Television and Skydance Television
