Amazon, Atresmedia team on Spanish comedy series

Amazon and Atresmedia Studios, Spanish broadcaster Atresmedia’s arm aimed to produce content for third-party operators, have teamed on Javier Veiga’s comedy series Pequeñas coincidencias  (Little Coincidences).

The deal gives Amazon Prime Video world premiere and SVOD rights to offer the series before Atresmedia’s channels family releases it for the Spanish free-to-air TV market.

Atresmedia Studios launched officially in March. Pequeñas coincidencias marks its second project, after El Embarcadero, a thriller series produced with La Casa de Papel creators, Vancouver Media, for Spain’s leading paybox Movistar+.

Pequeñas coincidencias is co-produced by Atresmedia Studios with Spain-based companies MedioLimón and Onza Entertainment.

Created by Veiga, a Galicia-born actor-writer, Pequeñas coincidencias will follow a couple who still don’t know each other, but tries to find each other. She’s a 37-year old woman who uses to take a new boyfriend every five years and has just opened a store.

The male character, a 40-year old successful gastronomic critic who enjoys a bachelor life dedicated to hedonism in body and soul, sees how his life becomes less comfortable after hosting his divorced brother at home.

Currently at casting stage, the series, with an undisclosed number of 50-minute episodes, will start to roll in a few weeks, Atresmedia said in a statement.

“Spanish narrative is fashionable. SVOD platforms have made our product accessible to a much wider market,” said Atresmedia Studios CEO Ignacio Corrales (pictured left, alongside Atresmedia Studios head of contents, Nacho Manubens) this week in a press breakfast at TV drama co-production meeting Conecta Fiction 2, in Spain’s Santiago de Compostela.
