Shonda Rhimes reveals upcoming Netflix projects

Netflix and Shonda Rhimes revealed the projects the TV veteran has been working on since signing a lucrative multi-year deal with the streamer last summer.

Eight upcoming projects have been unveiled by Rhimes and Netflix, including six dramas, a dark comedy and documentary.

Perhaps the most anticipated series will be an untitled project based on the New York Magazine article, How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People, by Jessica Pressler.

Delvey captured the imagination of a range of media after the story was revealed in May. Rhimes is the creator of the series and will executive produce.

Other dramas will include the untitled Bridgerton Project, based on Julia Quinn’s best-selling series of novels, The Warmth of Other Suns (WT), based on Pulitzer-Prize winning author Isabel Wilkerson’s book of the same name, and 1840’s drama Pick & Sepulveda (WT).

Netflix and Shondaland, Rhimes’ prodco, have also acquired the rights to Ellen Pao’s memoir Reset: My Fight for Inclusion and Lasting Change, detailing her life and career, including the lawsuit she brought against her former employer that sparked intense media scrutiny.

The duo have also acquired the rights to Kate Andersen Brower’s nonfiction book The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House, which offers an insider’s account of White House residence staffers and the upstairs downstairs lives they share with the First Families at one of the most famous homes in history.

Sunshine Scouts (WT) is a dark comedy about a group of teenage girls who have to deal with an apocalyptic disaster and Hot Chocolate Nutcracker offers a behind-the-scenes look at the Debbie Allen Dance Academy’s award-winning reimagining of the classic ballet, The Nutcracker. The doc will have Scandal director Oliver Bokelberg serving as director, cinematographer and producer.

“I wanted the new Shondaland to be a place where we expand the types of stories we tell, where my fellow talented creatives could thrive and make their best work and where we as a team come to the office each day filled with excitement,” said Rhimes.

Rhimes left her home at ABC to join Netflix last August. Shondaland Thursdays became prolific on the network, as Rhimes’ dramas Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder repeatedly gained supersize ratings.
