Comcast becomes first US operator to launch Amazon Prime
Comcast has partnered with Amazon in a deal that will establish it as the first US pay TV operator to launch Prime Video integrated into its television platform.
Amazon Prime Video is due to launch on Comcast’s Xfinity X1 later this year, allowing viewers to watch Prime Originals like Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (pictured), and Goliath.
Xfinity customers will also be able to access live events, watch Prime Video Channels subscriptions, and rent or buy titles through Amazon.
Prime Video content will be searchable using Comcast’s X1 Voice Remote and TV shows and movies will be available in 4K Ultra HD and HDR with a compatible X1 set-top box.
“Amazon Prime Video’s growing list of originals, movies, shows, documentaries, and kids’ programming will be an excellent complement to the overall X1 viewing experience,” said Dana Strong, president of consumer services, Comcast.
“We want to give customers easy access to all their favourite content in one place. X1 continues to be a platform that can curate live TV, on-demand movies and shows, and streaming internet video and music titles into one, easy-to-use, seamless experience.”
Amazon Prime Video vice president, Greg Hart, said: “Prime Video is dedicated to making your favourite shows and movies effortless to watch. The addition of the Prime Video app to X1 will make navigating between Prime Video and live TV easier than ever. We are excited for our Prime members to seamlessly find the shows and movies they love.”
The news comes after BT became the first UK pay TV provider to offer Amazon Prime Video access via its set-top box in June.
