Report: Amazon developing DVR for Fire TV
Amazon is developing a “DVR for the streaming era” that will be able to record live TV, according to Bloomberg.
The report, which cites a person familiar with the plans, said that the device will include physical storage and connect to Amazon’s existing Fire TV boxes using the same wireless technology as its Echo speakers.
Dubbed the ‘Frank DVR’, the box will reportedly take aim at rival offerings from the likes of TiVo by enhancing the capabilities of Amazon’s Fire TV device, which can currently stream live programming but not store it locally.
The report also claimed that Amazon is working on a software update for its smaller and lower-cost Fire TV stick device and is looking to integrate Fire TV software and content onto more third-party televisions.
Amazon partnered with retailer Best Buy in the US and Canada earlier this year to launch more than ten 4K and HD Fire TV Edition models from Toshiba and Insignia.
These smart TVs come with the Fire TV experience built-in, bringing together live over-the-air TV and streamed content. They also include voice remote with Alexa and can also be paired with any Echo device.
