Netflix and HBO tie up for Emmy wins

HBO and Netflix reached a tie with 23 wins each during the 70^th annual primtetime Emmys, which took place last night.

Netflix surpassed HBO for the first time in Emmy nominations this July, but when it came to the crunch the two entertainment powerhouses reached a draw in award wins.

Game of Thrones came up top as the Outstanding Drama Series winner, beating the likes of Netflix’s The Crown and Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale.

Peter Dinklage also received the award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for the HBO fantasy drama.

Other HBO winners included Barry star Bill Hader for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy and Henry Winkler for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for the same title.

Meanwhile, Claire Foy took home the prize for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama for Netflix and her appearance in The Crown.

The Crown’s Paterfamilias also took home an award for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series.

Other notable Netflix titles to receive an award included Black Mirror, which received the Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series gong for its USS Callister episode.

Godless also took home two wins with the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series going to Jeff Daniels and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series going to Merrit Wever.

Two titles to have received the most awards were Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and FX hit The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.

The Gianni Versace tale received three awards including Outstanding Limited Series, an award for Darren Criss as Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series and Outstanding Director for a Limited Series or Movie.

Mrs. Maisel took home Outstanding Comedy Series, an Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy award for its star Rachel Brosnahan, Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for its pilot episode, and an Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series award for Alex Borstein.

Notably, Hulu struggled with the Emmys this year despite becoming the first streamer to take home the drama prize last year. The only notable award for a Hulu title was given to Samira Wiley, who received an Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series award for her appearance in The Handmaid’s Tale.
