A+E to develop first int’l scripted copro

A+E Networks International has begun development on its first international, scripted coproduction, Miss Scarlet and The Duke, a crime drama about the first-ever female detective in 19^th century London.

The project, which stars Kate Phillips (Peaky Blinders), originated with Element 8 Entertainment’s production team, including Patty Ishimoto (Rogue), Todd Berger (Wynonna Earp) and Patrick Irwin (The Fall) who will executive produce.

A+E Networks is currently negotiating deals in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, and the US, with the aim of going into production by the end of Q1 in 2019.

In Miss Scarlet and the Duke, when Eliza Scarlet’s father dies, he leaves her penniless in a time where marriage is her only option for financial security. But the headstrong Eliza is determined to find another way.

The series is created and written by Rachael New (Grantchester).

The news arrives shortly after A+E Networks International hired Sky Vision’s Moreyba Bidessie as director of scripted development and sales. Bidessie has been recruited as A+E looks to make a push into international co-productions. More widely, A+E has been edging into the scripted arena over the last several years, with break-out success for dramas such as Roots and Knightfall (pictured).
