AMC’s Shudder takes Globo’s Night Shifter

AMC Networks-owned streaming service Shudder has acquired feature film The Night Shifter (pictured) from Brazilian broadcaster Globo. 

The horror-focused SVOD will debut the film in March across North America, the UK, Germany, Australia and New Zealand. It will be available in Portuguese with subtitles, or dubbed in German for select countries.

The acquisition marks the second Globo title picked up by Shudder. Last year, the service licensed the Brazilian version of Supermax, a thriller where the participants of a fictional reality show are confined in a deactivated maximum security prison in the middle of the Amazon rainforest. 

The Night Shifter follows a mortician with a paranormal ability to speak to the dead. When his conversations with the other side reveal a personal secret, he unwittingly unleashes a curse that puts his life and his family in grave danger. Directed by Dennison Ramalho, the film debuted at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal, and was also screened at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, the London Film Festival and the Festival Internacional de Cinema Fantàstic de Catalunya. 

The film is the latest premium effort out of Globo, which has set its sights on becoming a major player in the drama market. The broadcaster recently premiered its multi-part drama Harassment – an original for the broadcaster’s streaming platform Globoplay – at this month’s Berlinale.
