‘Masked Singer’ scores Australian adaptation
The Masked Singer has snagged an Australian adaptation.
The costumed-based singing format — which originated out of Korean broadcaster MBC as The King of Mask Singer — is heading to Australian commercial broadcaster Network 10 and sister channel WIN Network, where it will be produced locally by Warner Bros. Australia.
In the MBC Korea-distributed singing format, celebrities sing in full-body costumes and masks, with top contenders reaching series’ end while keeping their identities hidden.
The show is in the works in France, Germany, Mexico and the Netherlands, and will return for a second series on Fox in the US, where it will be produced in-house by the broadcaster.
As revealed by TBI, the format has also landed in the UK with broadcaster ITV.
In Australia, Network 10 is the home of shows such as Bondi Rescue, The Bachelor Australia, Chris & Julia’s Sunday Night Takeaway and Australian Survivor.
Network 10 chief content officer Beverley McGarvey said: “[Masked Singer] is genuinely original, addictive and a little bit bonkers. It is not that often that you get to launch something that feels so unique and exciting. We cannot wait to get going and have the whole country playing along.”
Warner Bros. Australia boss Michael Brooks added: “Australian TV audiences are screaming out for something fresh, exciting and original. The Masked Singer is not a singing show, it’s an addictive guessing game that will have the entire country asking one question…who is behind the mask?”
