‘L.A.’s Finest’ wins second season from Spectrum Originals

Cop show L.A.’s Finest, starring Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba, has been renewed for a second series by US streaming service Spectrum Originals.

The 13-part series, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer Television and 2.0 Entertainment in association with Sony Pictures Television, was the first show to launch on cable company Charter Communications’ new on demand platform.

The news was announced at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival, where L.A.’s Finest was the opening night show on Friday.

L.A.’s Finest is an action series spin-off of Jerry Bruckheimer’s Miami-based Bad Boys franchise, in which Union also stars.

The series follows Union’s character Syd Burnett, who has left a complicated past behind in Miami to become an LAPD detective. Dark Angel actress Alba meanwhile, plays her partner, a working mum with an equally complex history.

The series had to shut down in February when co-showrunners and executive producers Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier were involved in an on-set accident involving a stunt car and a metal shipping container, which led to Sonnier having a leg amputated below the knee.

“We’re thrilled L.A.’s Finest has resonated with our subscribers in such a major way.  When I first saw the pilot – a show about two strong women learning to trust and support each other and still getting into plenty of trouble – I knew I’d follow them anywhere,” said Katherine Pope, head of Spectrum Originals.

SPT has sold the series to Fox in the UK.
