‘Game Of Thrones’ shatters Emmy record as HBO sweeps nominations
HBO’s Game Of Thrones has shattered Emmy records to help the AT&T-owned cable channel scoop up 137 nominations, making it the most nominated outlet of the year.
The drama, which concluded its eighth and final series in May, garnered 32 nominations, the most for any show in a single season ever – beating a 25-year record held by NYPD Blue. Over the course of the show, it has received a total 161 nominations.
Other top nominees this year include Amazon Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel with 20 nominations, Sky Atlantic/HBO drama Chernobyl with 19, NBC’s long-running sketch show Saturday Night Live with 18, HBO’s Barry and FX’s Fosse/Verdon with 17 each and Netflix’s When They See Us with 16.
HBO regaining the top spot in Emmy nominations comes a year after Netflix managed to topple its longstanding record, gathering 112 total nominations over HBO’s 108 in 2018.
This year, however, the tables have turned again with Netflix trailing behind HBO’s 137 nominations by 20 nods, garnering just 117.
Elsewhere, the Best Outstanding Drama Series category saw five first-time nominees within its eight-title roster, including BBC One/Netflix’s Bodyguard, BBC America’s Killing Eve, Netflix’s Ozark, FX’s Pose and HBO’s Succession. Returning titles are Netflix/AMC’s Better Call Saul, HBO’s Game Of Thrones and NBC’s This Is Us.
Among this year’s seven Outstanding Comedy Series nominees, there are four first-timers, including BBC Three’s Fleabag, NBC’s The Good Place and CBC/Pop’s Schitt’s Creek, along with Netflix’s Russian Doll, which join returning shows Barry, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and HBO’s Veep.
