BBC America plans trip to ‘Eden’ with BBC Studios

BBC Studios and AMC Networks-backed US cablenet BBC America has handed out its first commission to the natural history producers behind Frozen Planet and Blue Planet II.

Eden is a six-parter that is being produced by BBC Studios’ Natural History Unit and will explore six untouched locations around the world and follow developments over the course of a year.

The show, revealed during the Television Critics Association (TCA) press tour, will focus on destinations including forests, deserts, mountains and ocean reefs.

Mark Brownlow, who worked on Blue Planet II and Planet Earth, executive produces and said the show would offer “ultimate escapism into the most pristine and stunning habitats left on planet earth.”

“Packed with wildlife spectacle, drama and new behaviours, we will reveal the surprising secrets to our Eden’s remarkable riches.”

BBC America revealed plans to expand its natural history offering earlier this year with the launch of a ‘micro-net’ within its channel, to focus on nature programming and to build on titles such as Blue Planet and Planet Earth.

The branded block, Wonderstruck, will appear later in 2019 every Saturday for 24 hours, offering premium nature and wildlife content designed to inspire and connect viewers with the outdoors.

The network also confirmed at the TCA’s that Blue Planet Now, the four-part follow-up to Blue Planet II, would anchor the block and debut in the autumn. The show explores the health of the oceans in the face of climate change.

Eden joins a growing roster of natural history shows on BBC America, with Frozen Planet II, Planet Earth III and Seven Worlds, One Planet all on the slate.
