Ryan Murphy reveals Netflix slate, including Ewan McGregor drama
Ryan Murphy has unveiled further details of his slate with Netflix including a Ewan McGregor-starring drama and a docuseries about Andy Warhol, following the Pose creator’s $300m deal with the US streamer.
Murphy, who left Fox in February last year as part of a rich deal with the streamer, told US magazine Time that a McGregor-starring limited scripted series about designer Halston is in the works, with the show exploring his impact on the world of fashion.
The Glee producer is also adapting musical A Chorus Line into a 10-part show, which will join previously announced project The Prom, another musical adaptation that will star Meryl Streep and Nicole Kidman.
Also in the works is a 10-part docuseries about Warhol that Murphy describes as “flashy,” which will explore the “real person who made all this stuff that changed all our lives.” It is joined by A Secret Love, about a lesbian couple who came out in their 80s, and an untitled show about the most fashionable people in the world.
Murphy also confirmed that Patti LuPone (Pose) will star in forthcoming Netflix drama Hollywood, which will debut in May and “look at Hollywood and the sex industry, and how absolutely everything has changed and nothing has changed.”
Other projects include a show about Hollywood star Marlene Dietrich, which is being worked on with Jessica Lange, while existing series include election-focused drama The Politician and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest prequel Ratchet. The latter’s release date is not yet known.
News of the huge slate comes 18 months since Netflix first made its move for Murphy, following a similar deal with Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes. The deals opened a new front in the battle for talent, with the streamer since doubling down on so-called ‘golden handcuff’ deals with sought-after producers.
Multi-year deals have been struck with numerous creators including high profile talent such as Black-ish writer and producer Kenya Barris and Marti Noxon. Earlier this year, Glee executive producer Brad Falchuk, who created Pose with Murphy, also signed up with the Netflix fold.
