eOne takes international rights to Global TV’s ‘Family Law’
Entertainment One has acquired international distribution rights to new Canadian legal drama Family Law, produced by Seven24 Films and Lark Productions for Global Television.
Set in Vancouver, Family Law follows lawyer and recovering alcoholic Abigail Bianchi as she struggles to put her career and family back together after hitting rock bottom. As a condition of her probation, she is forced to work at her estranged father’s firm, practicing in family law for the first time while forging new relationships with the half-brother and half-sister she’s never met. The end result is a dysfunctional family law firm operating to help other families with their own dysfunctions.
Casting on the series is underway. Susin Nielsen (Robson Arms, Cedar Cove) is showrunner, and the executive producers are Seven24′s Tom Cox and Jordy Randall and Lark’s Erin Haskett.
eOne will handle distribution for the series outside of Canada.
The deal was brokered by Noel Hedges, eOne’s EVP of acquisitions, international distribution, who said: “This is a dynamic, warm, touching and impactful series about the inside workings of family relationships, anchored around a flawed but highly intelligent female lawyer. We are looking forward to introducing the show to buyers later on this year.”
“In this moment in time, when audiences need an antidote to the nightly news, Family Law will provide an emotionally engaging escape, with compelling characters and the right balance of heart and humour,” said Randall.
