France’s TF1 to remake Cineflix drama ‘Marcella’ as ‘Rebecca’
French broadcaster TF1 has ordered a local adaptation of the UK crime drama Marcella.
Paris-based prodco Elephant is working on the remake, which will be titled Rebecca, following TF1’s deal with UK distributor Cineflix Rights, which has also taken exclusive global rights to the new series.
The original show, Marcella, was created by Hans Rosenfeldt and produced by Buccaneer Media for ITV in the UK and Netflix, and stars Anna Friel.
The eight-part Rebecca will star Anne Marivin as the titular detective, who returns to work six years after abandoning the hunt for a serial killer and quitting the police force.
Investigating a new series of brutal murders, Rebecca becomes convinced that it is the work of the same killer that previously eluded her, but her investigation is hampered by a series of blackouts and memory loss that cause her to question her own role in the killings.
Rebecca is directed by Didier Le Pêcheur, who also co-writes alongside Delphine Labouret.
James Durie, head of scripted at Cineflix Rights said: “Marcella has been a huge success in the UK and internationally – a testimony to the strength of the characters and story created by Hans Rosenfeldt, Nicola Larder and Buccaneer Media. We’re all really looking forward to seeing how the creative team at Elephant develop Rebecca for French viewers and – through our distribution deal –a global audience.”
